Filtering is often used in analog devices. In digital systems, engineers have to implement it, unfortunately, with a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) rather than a typical little 8-bit microcontroller. This is because the mathematics of digital filtering is much more complex than most engineers are used to dealing with. Moreover, digital filtering requires integer computations instead of floating point numbers. This leads to two problems. First, rounding effects due to limited bit depth can degrade filter response and can even make it unstable. Second, you need to deal with fractional numbers using integer math.
